I looked at you from across the room and my mind began to wonder. Here we go again. Another soul to learn, new secrets to keep, greater adventures to take. Here we go again. Starting over with someone new. Maybe this one won’t destroy me, but then again maybe it will.

I admit,
I was afraid
to love.
Not just love,
but to love her.
For she was a stunning
mystery. She carried things
deep inside her that no one
has yet to understand,
and I,
I was afraid to fail,
like the others.

She was the ocean
and i was just a boy
who loved the waves
but was completely
terrified to
swim.

I exist. Outside of being your mother, your wife, your sister, your daughter, I exist. I exist as a human first, as a being that experiences joy and suffering, beauty and learning, life and tragedy. I exist because the universe chose to put me here for a purpose higher than my relation to men. I exist because the stars died to give me life and planet blood runs through my veins. So the problem is not my existence. The problem is how you perceive it as so small, you do not believe I can exist at all apart from my bonds with men.

He sleeps right above your collarbones.  Cooped up in the space where your neck meets your shoulder.  Whispering little nothings that sound like love but taste like lies.  And you convince yourself he loves you, And you ignore the warning signs.  So you let him slip from your neck to your heart.  Down he goes in a trail of kisses that burn the skin that forms his path.  And when your heart is a wreck you no longer recognize,  When you’re breaking like every promise he’s ever made,  And your trembling lips can form nothing but the sound of his name, just remember that you knew this was the end from the start.

And when you choose a life partner, you’re choosing a lot of things, including your parenting partner and someone who will deeply influence your children, your eating companion for about 20,000 meals, your travel companion for about 100 vacations, your primary leisure time and retirement friend, your career therapist, and someone whose day you’ll hear about 18,000 times.

There is no shame in being hungry for another person. There is no shame in wanting very much to share your life with somebody.
